(foreword
T HE rapid growth of the painting collections
of The Cleveland Museum of Art since the
publication of Picture Book No. / in 1945
makes imperative this second volume, Picture Book No.
devoted largely to these new accessions. A few impor¬
tant early gifts and bequests not published in the first
book are also included. Thus, the new volume repro¬
duces paintings from many income sources: the John
Huntington, H in man B. Hurl but, L. E. Holden, Delia
E. Holden, J. H, Wade, Norman O. Stone and Ella A.
Stone Memorial, and Mr. and Mrs, William H. Marlatt
funds; gifts from Mrs, E. E* Holden, J, H. Wade, the
Louis Dudley Beaumont Foundation, and Hanna Fund;
and bequests from Henry W. Kent, William G, Mather,
Elisabeth Severance Prentiss, and John L, Severance,
The impressive group of paintings illustrated in the
new book comprises some of the most important acces¬
sions in the Museum's collection and is an evidence,
also, of the wide field which these acquisitions cover.
The two “Picture Books’' taken together represent,
therefore, a large proportion of the major possessions of
the Museum in the painting field.

A page of notes can do no more than indicate the policy of
acquisition followed by the Museum. The purpose always is
to obtain objects of the highest possible intrinsic quality and
beauty. Extraordinary opportunities have come up unexpected¬
ly in recent years, making possible such diverse and varied
accessions as the Spanish “Coronation of the Virgin” from
Valencia, the Mantegna “Pieta” from the Botkine Collection,
the Geertgen “The Adoration of the Magi,” and the Tintoretto
“Baptism of Christ.” Whether large like the “Coronation” and
the Tintoretto “Baptism,” or small as the Mantegna “Pieta”
and the Geertgen “Adoration”; whether on wood, canvas, or
parchment, or in tempera or oil, the importance of each is
ascribable to its masterly concept and execution and its worth
in forming a collection of fine pictures.
Che Italian section, originally begun in the Museum by the
Holden Collection, has grown immeasurably by additions made
through the Holden and Marlatt funds, and lately by gifts of
Hanna Fund, The Tiepolo scenes illustrating Horatius Codes
of ancient Rome and the Lotto “Portrait of a Nobleman” are
witness to the stature of these new accessions.
Among the most noticeable paintings is the group of French
nineteenth- and twentieth-century canvases, ranging from the
Degas “Frieze of Dancers,” the Pissarro landscape, and the
Morisot landscape with portrait, through the Rousseau “J ungle”
and the Rouault “Christ,” all purchases through gifts of Hanna
Fund, Among other French pictures, a Claude landscape from
the Marlatt Fund and a Georges de La Tour, a purchase through
gift of Hanna Fund, add significant types of French seven¬
teenth-century pictures.
Over a period of years there has been a consistent effort to
assemble unique German primitives. The latest are the Schlaegl
Altar, a complete altarplece of the fifteenth century from that
Austrian monastery, and the Altdorfer “Visitation” of the
sixteenth century. The Flemish and Dutch schools include some
of the most outstanding of the new accessions in the Rubens
“Portrait of Isabella Brant,” the artist's first wife, and “The
Music Party” of Pieter de Hooch, a Dutch genre interior
painted in the artist's most opulent vein. Finally, the Rem¬
brandt “Portrait of a Young Student,” a penetrating and
psychologically profound character study, brings an example of
this greatest painter's late style.
